Can't Pay Your Taxes? Your Options With the IRS
By Erick Martinez · September 18, 2026 · 4 min read
Owing more than you can pay is stressful, but you have options. The worst move is doing nothing.
Always file on time
The penalty for not filing is usually much larger than the penalty for not paying. File your return by the deadline even if you can't pay the full balance.
Payment plans
The IRS offers short-term plans and longer monthly installment agreements. Many people can apply online. Interest and some penalties continue until the balance is paid, so paying what you can now still helps.
Penalty relief
If you have a clean history or had a serious reason for falling behind, you may qualify to have some penalties removed. It's worth asking.
Get a plan that fits your budget
A tax professional can review what you owe, check for errors, and set up a payment arrangement you can actually keep.
