Did You Miss Deductions Last Year? How an Amended Return Works
By Erick Martinez · September 26, 2026 · 4 min read
If you filed in a hurry or did it yourself, there may be money left on the table. The good news: many mistakes can be fixed with an amended return.
What is an amended return?
Form 1040-X lets you correct a return you already filed, whether you left out income, missed a deduction or claimed the wrong filing status.
Common things people miss
These show up often during a one-year-back review:
- Education credits for tuition
- The child and dependent care credit
- Self-employment expenses such as mileage, phone and home office
- Retirement contributions that qualify for a deduction or credit
- Income forms that arrived after filing
Is there a time limit?
Yes. To claim a refund, you generally must file within three years of the original due date or two years after you paid the tax, whichever is later. Don't wait too long.
Should you amend?
Not every small difference is worth amending. A review compares what you filed with what you could have claimed, so you can decide with real numbers.
