The Tax Document Checklist: What to Bring to Your Tax Preparer

By Erick Martinez · September 29, 2026 · 5 min read

Showing up organized is the fastest way to a correct return and a shorter appointment. Use this checklist before you meet with your tax preparer.

Personal information

Your preparer needs to confirm who is on the return and where refunds should go.

  • Social Security numbers or ITINs for you, your spouse and dependents
  • Last year's tax return
  • Bank routing and account number for direct deposit

Income documents

Every form that reports income to the IRS also needs to be on your return. Missing one is a common reason people get IRS letters later.

  • W-2s from every employer
  • 1099-NEC, 1099-K or 1099-MISC for freelance or gig work
  • 1099-INT, 1099-DIV and 1099-B for interest, dividends and investments
  • 1099-R and SSA-1099 for retirement and Social Security income
  • Records of any rental or business income and expenses

Deductions and credits

These records can lower what you owe or raise your refund.

  • Form 1098 for mortgage interest and property tax records
  • Childcare costs and the provider's tax ID
  • Tuition forms (1098-T) and student loan interest (1098-E)
  • Charitable donation receipts
  • Health insurance forms (1095-A if you used the Marketplace)

Anything from the IRS or the state

Bring every letter or notice you received during the year, even if you think it was resolved. It helps your preparer avoid repeating an old problem.
